Personalising Your Web Browsing

"When you get to the point where you really understand your computer, it's probably obsolete." (Anon)

Many people access the the World Wide Web every day with some difficulty. Some sites that they visit have text that is too small to read. Perhaps the colours used make reading difficult or animations are too distracting.

Whilst it is, undoubtedly every web developers duty to make each of their sites as accessible and easy-to-use as possible, there are some options available to the average user that can make their web browsing far easier, and pleasanter in many situations. This section of Imp's Guide is devoted to the various steps, that you, the user, can take, to make life easier for you as well as listing some of the resources that are available that may help.

In each case, I have tried to list a problem and a suggestion for a solution. Not all of the suggested solutions will work on every web site that you visit. Some may work partially. Some mightn't work at all depending on the technology that has been used on each, individual, site. However, you may find enough suggestions here to make life a little easier.

Also, remember that, if you find a web site particularly difficult to use, let the site owner or the webmaster know. Many web sites have a duty to try and make their resources as accessible as possible but they may be unaware of specific problems unless you tell them. Consider yourself a potential customer at every site you visit and direct your feedback to them in the same way you would voice a customer complaint in any other shop.

The more people who complain about inaccessible, or unusable, web sites, the greater the chance of making real changes.

if you have any other tips or techniques that you think other people might find useful, please send them to me and I will try to include them in this section.
